Petrified Alga:
The oldest fossil to be found on earth that can be seen with the naked eye
is a fossilized alga. This alga once flourished in warm seas over what is
now Minnesota. It is estimated to have lived some 2 billion, 300 million
years ago. The fossil is often called Mary Ellen Jasper
because it has been petrified, or replaced, by jasper. The
swirling pattern on the stone is where the alga used to be.
