Snowflake Obsidian: Obsidian is
a type of natural glass. Its main compound is quartz; however, it has no
crystal structure. When hit with a hammer, it breaks into sharp, jagged
fragments. It is formed when lava cools very quickly and solidifies as a
glass because there was not enough time for the crystals to form. This
natural glass is not stable and after several million years,
small fibrous crystals of quartz and feldspar resembling snowflakes
replace the glass. This process, called dentrification, starts
from within the obsidian and spreads outward.
