Yellowstone River Agate:
Nodules of this interesting agate are found in the bottoms of the
Yellowstone River. The Yellowstone River flows northward from Wyoming
through Yellowstone National Park and across Montana where it joins the
Missouri River. Each season, these agate nodules weather out of the
mountains and wash into the river where they can be found. Agate’s chief
component is silica and is from the quartz family. Agate is a
microscopically crystallized variety of quartz. Some pieces of
Yellowstone River agate have deposits of manganese in them that
sometimes resemble plants or moss. Origin: Montana
