South Dakota Conglomerate (Pudding Stone): Pudding stone
is a name given to any sedimentary rock known as a “conglomerate” that
is colorful. A conglomerate is composed of water-worn pebbles or river
gravel that have been cemented together by a finer mineral deposit.
This finer mineral deposit fills in the spaces between the pebbles and
forms a solid rock. A particular pudding stone was formed from pebbles
of jasper cemented together with quartz. It may be tumbled and
polished to give it a slick and shiny surface.
